Best gifts of all

Filed under: Uncategorized — landconservancy @ 2:29 pm

In the closing weeks of 2009, Legacy Land Conservancy completed six conservation agreements, each unique and collectively as diverse as the landscapes around us. Woodlot additions, farms, and rivers are all among the lands that will remain – forever – pretty much as they are today.

It’s common for these last weeks of the year to be our busiest. But it’s a time I look forward to as part of the joy of the winter holidays. These are gifts to all of us who live here now, or will in the future, from incredibly generous families.

5 Reasons to Think Local First

Filed under: Uncategorized — landconservancy @ 2:00 pm

Since nothing is more local than the lands that surround us, it’s no surprise that the Legacy Land Conservancy is a fan of the Local First movement. I was in Jackson today and stopped by the Armory Arts center (home of, among other things, the Jackson School of the Arts) and picked up a flyer from Jackson Local First (www.jxnlocalfirst.com). It offers some great answers about shopping “local first” (What if they don’t have what I want? What if they cost too much? What if they aren’t open when I need them?) including their Five Reasons to think Local First: (more…)

Snowflakes: Science and beauty

Filed under: Uncategorized — landconservancy @ 12:15 pm

Sugar Plum Snowflake by CaptPiper on FlickrThe snowflakes last night & this morning are about the best we’ve had so far this season — beautifully intricate, delicate, big crystals. These types of snow crystals are dendritic crystals. (More about snowflake shapes) Dendritic means tree-like, and it comes from the Greek word for tree, dendron. Snow isn’t the only thing that can be described as dendritic, of course — trees (of course), some crystals & minerals, the pattern in which streams drain into rivers… Are there other things you can think of?

Your task for today: Look at one snowflake (if you haven’t already; in which case, look at another one!)

Cold but sunny!

Filed under: Uncategorized — landconservancy @ 12:48 pm

New Years Nature WalkSaturday morning I had the pleasure of walking in the woods with 8 hardy souls willing to brave the windchill. Whether in the name of New Year’s resolutions to get fit or out in nature, or in the interest of simply getting out of the house on a crisp blue-sky day, we were all bundled up & ready for the trail at Legacy Land Conservancy’s Beckwith Conservancy Nature Preserve. We walked underneath the silent snowy conifers & along the stream, peering at hundreds (or thousands!) of turkey prints. And were those pine-marten tracks we saw? After crossing the bridge for a loop under the oaks, we headed back to the trailhead, startling a herd of deer. As the perfect end to a cold hike, Cindy had brought some piping hot cider, and Patti had made muffins – yum! I’m ready to start the new year!
